  • What is performance art?

Not to be confused with the "performing arts," performance art refers to a form that pulls from all the arts. It draws from comedy, dance, film, music, poetry, ritual, sculpture, theater, and video. Milwaukee has been a thriving community for performance art ever since 1960.

The performance art for MVP is also site specific. All the art is original, created by Milwaukee County artists responding to a specific voting location.

  • How did this project happen?

John Loscuito and Pegi Taylor are the co-producers for My Vote Performs.  As a team and singly they have had years of experience curating, funding, promoting, and managing arts events. From 2004-2006, Loscuito and Taylor worked together on the Performance Art Showcase. This annual event was presented in November at Vogel Hall of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Its goal was to expose as many people as possible to Southeastern Wisconsin performance art talents.

After the 2006 production, Taylor and Loscuito wanted to expand the reach of the showcase and saw a rich opportunity with the upcoming 2008 presidential election. Initially, Taylor suggested a parade for first-time voters, because she was so excited when her daughter could vote for the first time. Loscuito pointed out many logistical problems with this idea.

Loscuito and Sheri Urban came up with the concept of having performance art at polling places. Taylor and Loscuito knew a project of this nature would take tremendous planning and set aside 2007 to get the basics of the project in place.
