Barbara Schaffer Bacon is co-director of Animating Democracy, a program of Americans for the Arts Institute for Community Development and the Arts, which fosters arts and cultural activity that encourages and enhances civic engagement and dialogue. She notes, "Since the first parade of independence, the arts have helped to animate and celebrate our democracy. The arts and humanities contribute unique programs, settings, and creative approaches that reach new and diverse participants, stimulate public dialogue about civic issues, and inspire action to make change. How wonderful and appropriate to celebrate citizen participation though the arts on Election Day. My Vote Performs promises to lift the spirits of Milwaukee voters and the ideals of democracy.

Karen Goeschko, Assistant Director for Programs and Services at the Wisconsin Arts Board, noted, "In reviewing the application for funding for My Vote Performs, our grant panel expressed the hope that this program can be a stimulus for similar initiatives across the country. My Vote Performs connects the arts and civic engagement in wonderful ways, and the Arts Board is delighted to be able to support it.

Third District County Supervisor Gerry Broderick says, "As a former art teacher, I understand how the arts can enrich every aspect of life. I am pleased that My Vote Performs, a project that will encourage voting and enhance the voting experience through performance art at twelve polling sites, is having its national premier in Milwaukee County."

Historian and writer John Gurda says, "My Vote Performs is in the very best tradition of Milwaukee's civic life. Our political ancestors believed passionately in something they called 'public enterprise.' What better way to honor that spirit than through public performances at public polling places on the very day the public chooses its next leaders?"
